  • French Language Programs

French is an official language in 33 countries worldwide. More than 130 million people speak French, on five continents, and it is the second most studied language in the world. The Louis Riel School Division offers three different programs to support French language education in the community.

    Basic French

All students in the Louis Riel School Division receive French language education through the Basic French curriculum. Offered from Grade 4 to Grade 12, it is intended for non-French-speaking students enrolled in English schools. The "Early Start" French program is available at some divisional schools, for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students.

The video below, I Love French Class, provides a perspective on the shift to the balanced literacy approach that Manitoba Education has made. The video illustrates the Basic French methodology in action and it also provides testimonials from teachers, students, parents, and administrators as to the success of this approach for student achievement.

    French Immersion

The French Immersion program is designed for children whose first language is not French, but who wish to pursue their education in a French milieu. It is an effective way for children to become fluent in French while achieving all the outcomes of the regular curricula. By becoming functionally bilingual, students will create additional future opportunities for travel, studies and career choices.
