The annual event was put on hold the past two years due to the pandemic. In total, 250 staff retired over the past three years80 from the 2019-2020 school year, 89 from the 2020-2021 school year and 81 from the 2021-2022 school year.

"Even through a global pandemic, students continued to see success and feel supported," said Christian Michalik, Superintendent, when addressing the group. "This was made possible because of your hard work and our shared values as a community.

The evening included a delicious dinner as well as a photo booth so attendees could take home a fun memento.

One of the pieces of homework that was assigned to the guests of honour was to answer a few questions about what comes after retirement. Travelling and gardening topped the list of planned activities, with many referencing time with family, volunteer work, and reading as things to look forward to. In terms of travel, Mexico was high on the list of destinations, as was Italy and Europe in general. 'Freedom' was the word most often used to describe what retirement means.

When asked to share favourite memories of time spent in the division, students were most often mentioned in those reflections. Click here to view the reflections from more than 90 LRSD retirees.

"Thank you for choosing to spend some or all of your working life in LRSD, for your contributions and for your dedication," said Sandy Nemeth, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees. "Because of you, our learners thrive, our communities flourish and we are richer as a school division."
