  • Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week 2024

Fair dealing is “a long-standing feature of Canadian copyright law” that permits certain uses of copyright material for educational purposes. The fair dealing provision in Canada’s copyright law permits teachers to use copyright-protected materials in their lessons provided the dealing is “fair” and does not threaten the interests of copyright owners

The Copyright Consortium of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) strives to ensure that teachers and staff working in our schools have the latest information regarding fair dealing. Each year, the Copyright Consortium facilitates a social media awareness campaign to coincide with the international Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week in February.  In addition to supporting the fair dealing provision for education in the Canadian Copyright Act, the objective of this advocacy campaign is to promote greater awareness and use of the Copyright Consortium’s websites such as CopyrightMatters.ca and the FairDealingDecisionTool.ca. This year, the campaign runs during the week of February 26 – March 1, 2024.

All LRSD employees are responsible for respecting Canadian copyright legislation. Access to information on Copyright and the Fair Dealing Guidelines is readily available on the LRSD public website, as well as on all LRSD My Site and school portal pages under useful links.
