Library Services

Glenwood Library:

The library offers a rich variety of materials to promote reading for pleasure and to support learning in our school community. Four computers with Internet access are also available for student use in our library. A collection of imaginative and fictional material as well as information media is maintained to encourage students to read for pleasure. Students are encouraged to use all forms of media, including online and traditional formats, to explore and enhance their learning. In the library, students are supported in pursuit of all forms of literacy and learning by classroom teachers and other staff, including a half-time library assistant.

Schedule:

Students and staff are always welcome in the library. However, the library assistant is available on site as follows:

• Days 2, 4 and 6 full days

While the library may be accessed when the library assistant is not in, students should be accompanied by an adult.

Every homeroom has one scheduled book exchange period during the school cycle.

The library is also used for Buddy Reading, during which students from elementary classrooms are paired with older students for book sharing and reading as well as various other activities. Most classrooms have one scheduled Buddy Reading period per school cycle.

As well, teachers collaboratively and individually plan many other curriculum integrated and social learning experiences that occur in this space.

Student Responsibilities:

1. Items withdrawn from the library are due back the following library class for each grade. For example: Grade 5/6 books are due every Day 6. Books not returned by the next library period are considered overdue.
2. The library will send out reminder notes to students who have overdue books every Day 1 so students will know which books they need to return.
3. Books can be renewed for an additional week as long as they have not been requested by another student. To renew a book it must be brought to the library so the library assistant can update the due date on the computer.
4. Students are responsible for all library items checked out under their name. This includes proper care of books at all times, and reporting any damage to the library assistant. If a book is damaged beyond repair or lost while checked out under a student's name, that student is responsible for paying the replacement cost of that book or bringing in a book of similar value from home in exchange.

Volunteers are welcome in the library to help with various library duties. Please call the library assistant for information about volunteering.
