    Compulsory Credits:

    All grade nine students must take the following 5 compulsory courses.

    English Language Arts: Foundations (E10F) 1 credit

    This course is designed to increase the students' knowledge of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing. 

    Students will:

    • increase their knowledge of literary concepts as they continue to build their skills and knowledge of informal and formal essays and fictional forms of writing
    • study news and magazine articles, short stories, film, poetry, novels and complete projects throughout the semester.
    • continue the learn importance on the proper use of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary


    Math (M10F) 1.0 credit

    This is a foundation course to prepare students for multiple possible pathways in Grades 10 to 12.  It will build on the skills and knowledge that has been gained from previous K-8 Math teachings. The activities that take place in the Grade 9 Mathematics classroom  stem from a problem-solving approach and are based on the seven mathematical processes.

    Students will learn:

    • Number Sense
    • Statistics
    • Powers
    • Linear Relations
    • Circle Geometry
    • Polynomials
    • Similarity and Symmetry 

     

    Science (10F)  1.0 credit

    This course provides an overview of various branches of science.

    Students will learn:

    • Lab safety
    • Physics: Electrostatics and electrical circuits
    • Astronomy: The structure and evolution of the universe
    • Chemistry: Classifying Matter and Atomic Structure
    • Biology: Heredity and reproduction 

     

    Canada in the Contemporary World (CCW10F) 1 credit

    This course is designed to increase students' knowledge of Canada's contemporary plurality so they are enabled to become informed decision makers actively involved in their local, national and global communities.

    Students will:

    • develop an understanding of Canada today, including its demographics, geography and political organization

    • consider the influence of the land on the development of Canada

    • examine evolving stories of interaction among the people of Canada

    • explore historical and contemporary complexities of citizenship and identity

    • develop an understanding of global interdependence and explore Canadian questions and issues within a global context

    Physical and Health Education (PE10F) 1 credit

    Students are provided with a planned and balanced program in order to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for physically active and healthy lifestyles.   Students will be in combined Gr. 9/10 classes in order to provide increased choice in activities.

    Elective Courses:

    All grade nine students must take 3 elective courses.

    VISUAL ART (VA10G) 1.0 credit

    Open your mind and let your imagination soar!  This course will expose you to a variety of art materials and artistic opportunities.  Feel free to create and express within a supportive and creative environment.  Draw upon your previous experiences, learn new techniques and hone your skills as you truly explore the artist within.

    Students will learn:

    • create art in a variety of media
    • be part of a supportive and creative atmosphere
    • learn new artistic techniques 

     

    BAND:  CONCERT (CB10S) 1.0 credit

    As a member of the band, you do more than just play your instrument.  You are a part of an exciting community that fosters leadership skills, new friendships and creates memories that will last a lifetime.  Whether you feel you're a beginner musician or diversely talented, there's a place for you in the band.

    Concert Band is offered as a year long course.

    Students will:

    • be a part of a vibrant musical community
    • learn leadership and personal responsibility
    • be exposed to many different kinds of music

     

    DRAMA (DA10S) 1.0 credit

    Are you interested in acting and performance but a little nervous to give it a try?  Don't worry – we will teach you all the steps in a safe and supportive environment. 

    Students will:

    • Play cooperative dramatic games
    • Develop basic improvisational skills
    • Perform script work from television and film
    • Challenge personal risk levels
    • Learn to be a supportive group member 

               

    FRENCH (FR10G) 1.0 credit

    French at the 10G level provides students with a basic understanding of the French language. 

    Students will:

    • Practice authentic language in context
    • create projects and presentations on a variety of topics
    • explore French culture

     

    INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND VIRTUAL REALITY (AICT1_AICT2_15F) 1.0 credit

    This course teaches students the fundamentals of computer programming using block-based programming languages while creating their own animations, graphics, and games for the web. This course also teaches students how to build their very own virtual reality worlds using HTML and the A-Frame JavaScript library. Students can view their VR creations on the computer, through phones, or through an Oculus Rift.

     

    MUSIC:  GUITAR (GU10S) 1.0 credit

    This course is designed for students to develop a love of music through the guitar.  Videos, recordings, guest artists, and field trips will also contribute to the course content.

    Students will learn:

    •  solo and ensemble playing;
    • technical development;
    • ear training;
    • classical and pick-style technique;
    • theory; and historical information specific to the instrument.  


    Practical Arts:

    TEXTILE ARTS AND DESIGN (TAD10S) -  1.0 credit

    Students will:

    • be provided with an introduction to creating with fabric
    • make at least 3 projects over the course of the term to learn the basics of sewing construction. 

     

    Special Note: All materials are provided and no sewing experience is required.

     

    ELECTRICITY / ELECTRONICS (EE10G) 1.0 credit 

    This is an introductory electronics course that is designed for the student who has little or no experience in this field of study.  Through project based learning, students will be introduced to basic electronic theory, simple components, circuits and a variety of construction processes and applications.

    Students will learn:

    • General shop safety/tool and equipment safety
    • Basic manufacturing processes (3D printer technology)
    • Electronic components and testing equipment
    • Electronic theory and general applications
    • Game design
    • Construction of an intrusion alarm

    Special Note: Students will require a calculator, pen/pencil, binder, and safety glasses.

     

    FAMILY STUDIES (FS10F) 1.0 credit

    Students will learn:

    • about themselves
    • their family
    • their friends
    • healthy love relationships

     

    FOODS AND NUTRITION (FN10G) 1.0 credit

    Students will learn:

    • what to eat before a competition (energy boosting foods)
    • nutrition information regarding the foods we eat
    • foods grown in Manitoba and Canada
    • kitchen safety
    • implementation of a recipe

     

    GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION (GCT10G) 1.0 credit 

    This course will appeal to students who have an interest in producing graphic images using a variety of methods. 

    Students will learn:

    • computer graphics
    • illustration
    • video production
    • animation
    • screen-printing
    • photography
    • airbrushing

     

    INTRODUCTION TO PRE-ENGINEERING (CT15G/DT15G) 1.0 credit 

    This course is designed to use Project Based Learning as the instructional model. Students will be involved in problem-solving investigations and other engaging tasks that allow them to work in groups and/or individually to solve open ended engineering problems. Students will be taught all required manufacturing skills, and how to safely utilize the equipment in the lab.

    Students will learn:

    • lab safety
    • all required manufacturing skills in order to solve problems.
    • basic engineering principles
    • design process
    • to solve challenges in a variety of engineering disciplines (e.g. mechanical, environmental, geological, and electrical)

     

    METALWORK TECHNOLOGY (MET10G) 1.0 credit

    This fun "hands on" course will introduce students to the unique world of metal working. Projects are designed so that students who have an interest can be proud of their accomplishments.

    Students will learn:

    • shop safety
    • use of a variety of metalworking tools and machines
    • about different types of metals
    • design process

    Special Note:  All processes and machines will be demonstrated, so no experience is required.

     

    POWER MECHANICS (PM10G) 1.0 credit 

    This course will appeal to students who are interested in the functioning of engines and who enjoy working on mechanical equipment. 

    Students will learn:

    • basic shop practices
    • common service jobs (tires, wheel bearing and lifting devices). 
    • an introduction to welding process including MIG, ARC and Oxy-acetylene welding, cutting and plasma cutting.

     

    WOODWORK TECHNOLOGY (WT10G) 1.0 credit 

    This course will appeal to students who enjoy designing and building projects from wood. Students will have the opportunity to learn new skills in the shop with the introduction of advanced equipment and processes.

    Students will learn:

    • shop safety
    • use of a variety of wood working tools and machines
    • about different types of wood
    • design process

     

    Additional Electives:

    Students may pick these in addition to their compulsory and elective credits.

    MUSIC:  Concert Choir (CC10G) 1.0 credit

    Being a part of the choir means being a member of a dynamic community that does more than just make music together.  Whether you're a beginner musician or diversely talented, there's a place for you in the choir.  Choir is offered as a year long course.

    Students will:

    • make new friendships,
    • develop leadership skills and
    • create memories that will last a lifetime. 

     

    JAZZ BAND (JB10S) 1.0 credit

    PREREQUISITE:  Student must be registered in Concert Band 10G.

    Explore the various style of Jazz, including Swing, Latin, Funk and Rock, in the big band setting.  Placements in the Jazz Band are based on grade and level of experience.   Jazz Band is offered as a year long course.

    Students will:

    • be exposed to Jazz, Swing, Latin, Funk, and Rock styles
    • work in a group setting to create and learn about music

     

    JAZZ/ELECTRIC GUITAR (GU10S) 1.0 credit

    PREREQUISITE:  Student must be registered in Guitar 10G. A minimum one-year of playing experience is required.

    Jazz/electric guitar is an advanced guitar course for dedicated music students who are interested in further developing their improvisation and electric guitar skills. Students who have shown a commitment to reading, chording, and improvisation will be encouraged to continue in the jazz/electric guitar program. Jazz/electric guitar is offered as a year-long course.

    Students will learn: 

    • theory and history specific to jazz music;
    • technical development on the electric guitar;
    • composition; arranging; improvisation; and ear training and analysis.

    WIND ENSEMBLE (WE10S)

    PREREQUISITE:  By audition only. Student must be registered in Music: Band.

    Members of this ensemble explore the ideas presented in concert band at a more advanced level. Please see Mr. Monson for more details.

    YEARBOOK DESIGN (YDT10G) - 1 CREDIT

    This course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to produce high-quality images and visual designs for publication.  Students will learn how to design, arrange, and manipulate text and images using common graphic design applications, including image editing and desktop publishing software.  Students of this class will be involved in the school  yearbook design and editing process, putting their "stamp" on the school yearbook.
