Code of Behaviour

Nelson McIntyre Collegiate - Code of Behaviour

1. Purpose

Nelson McIntyre Collegiate is committed to providing a safe, caring, respectful, and inclusive learning environment where all students can learn, grow, and belong.
This Code of Conduct outlines the shared expectations for behaviour that support student well-being, positive relationships, and academic success.

This Code of Conduct applies to all members of the school community, students, staff, parents/guardians/caregivers, volunteers, and visitors, and applies during all school-related activities, both on-site and off-site, including online environments and school-sponsored events

2. Guiding Beliefs

Nelson McIntyre Collegiate’s Code of Conduct is grounded in the beliefs articulated in LRSD Policy JK – Supporting Student Behaviour: https://media.lrsd.net/media/Default/medialib/jk-supporting-student-behaviour.6f3cda25744.pdf

  • Students demonstrate expected behaviours when they have the knowledge, skills, and support to do so.
  • Concerning or serious behaviours often reflect lagging skills or unmet needs, not intent to harm.
  • The purpose of adult intervention is to reduce harm, restore safety, and teach or create conditions for expected behaviours.
  • Behaviour support is most effective when it maintains dignity, strengthens relationships, and promotes learning and growth.

We recognize that identity, culture, lived experience, and developmental stage shape behaviour, and we commit to responding in ways that are equitable, trauma-informed, and restorative

3. Shared Responsibilities

Creating a safe and caring school is a collective responsibility.

Students are expected to:

  • Treat others with respect, kindness, and fairness
  • Engage in learning in ways that support their own success and the success of others

  • Follow school and divisional policies

Staff are expected to:

  • Model respectful, inclusive, and responsible behaviour
  • Teach and reinforce behavioural expectations explicitly

  • Be proportionate to the behaviour
  • Consider context, intent, and impact
  • Aim to repair harm and restore relationships

Interventions may include restorative conversations, mediation, counselling supports, behaviour planning, and, when necessary, disciplinary consequences in accordance with provincial regulation and LRSD policy
