Code of Behaviour

J. H. Bruns Collegiate is a welcoming, safe and caring school community – an environment in which effective teaching and learning occurs.

We believe that…effective teaching and learning occurs best in a positive school climate where students behave appropriately.

Students and staff need to demonstrate the importance of respect for themselves, others and our property.

Our Goal is…

Our goal is for students to achieve self-discipline. Our expectations revolve around two beliefs. These powerful words guide the standard of behaviour at our school.

RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY

We must:

behave responsibly
be respectful to self and others
show concern for and tolerance of others
take responsibility for our actions

Students are expected to:

demonstrate respect for the rights, roles and responsibilities of other students and staff
demonstrate respect for the school and the property of others
adhere to school policies respecting appropriate use of electronic mail and the Internet, including the prohibition of materials that the school has determined to be objectionable
attend school regularly and arrive on time for school
follow guidelines for appropriate school attire
ensure that all assignments and tests demonstrate academic honesty

Staff is expected to play a critical role by modeling respect and supoprt for the above expectations.

Staff will intervene when students:

Do not follow the school expectations of respect and responsibility
Do not maintain academic integrity (involved in plagiarism, cheating etc)
Do not uphold their academic responsibilities around homework, assignment completion and test preparation

Students are referred to administration when interventions by staff have not worked or when a more serious situation has occurred.

The following are unacceptable according to the Manitoba Public Schools Act and will result in immediate referral to the administration:

Bullying, or abusing physically, sexually or psychologically (orally, in writing or otherwise) any person
Discriminating unreasonably on the basis of any characteristic set out in subsection 9(2) of The Human Rights Code
Using, possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs at school

The following will not be tolerated on school site and will result in immediate referral to administration:

Gang involvement
Possessing a weapon, as “weapon” is defined in section 2 of the Criminal Code (Canada)

Interventions, including disciplinary consequences for violating the Code of Conduct, in all situations are intended to preserve the dignity and self worth of all involved in the disciplinary action.

Interventions/consequences may include:

Counselling
Formal conference
Temporary withdrawal from the classroom
Removal of privileges
Detention
Restitution
Clinician referral
Performance contract
Police involvement
In-School Suspension
Out-of-School Suspension
