NMC Thrive: Listening to Student Voices, Shaping Our Future

What happens when a school pauses long enough to ask students a simple question, and truly listens to the answers?

At Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, that question became the foundation of NMC Thrive, a student voice initiative designed to better understand what helps young people flourish at school.

Throughout the school year, students were invited into conversations centred on two guiding questions:

  • What do you need to thrive?
  • What kind of school community do you want to be part of?

The responses were thoughtful, honest, hopeful, and sometimes challenging. More importantly, they reminded us that students are experts in their own experiences.

Rather than collecting opinions through a traditional survey, NMC Thrive invited students into authentic dialogue. Through classroom conversations, collaborative activities, and a school-wide art experience, hundreds of student voices were gathered, reflected upon, and transformed into a lasting symbol of our community.

Working alongside local artist Bruno de Oliveira Jayme, students participated in a collaborative mural project unlike a traditional painting. Students first shared their ideas, hopes, values, and aspirations for the kind of school community they wanted to help create. Those conversations became the inspiration for the artwork. Using paint, colour, and layered imagery, every student who participated contributed their own marks to the mural, making each person's contribution a meaningful part of the whole.

The finished mural is more than a piece of art, it is a visual story of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. It represents the diversity, strengths, relationships, and collective hopes of our students. No single image tells the story on its own; rather, the many layers and contributions reflect the idea that a thriving school community is created when every voice matters and every person belongs. It serves as a daily reminder that our school is shaped not only by the people within it, but by the relationships we build together.

"NMC Thrive reminded us that leadership begins with listening," says Principal Kimberley Adair-Gagnon. "When students know their voices matter, they develop a stronger sense of belonging, ownership, and hope. This mural is more than a work of art—it is a living reminder that every student has helped shape the story of our school, and that together we can create a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive."

As the conversations were analyzed, five themes consistently emerged:

  • Creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where every student feels they belong.
  • Expanding opportunities for engaging learning and diverse programming.
  • Improving school environments that support wellbeing.
  • Strengthening community through relationships and shared experiences.
  • Continuing to build a culture where every voice matters.

These conversations have already begun influencing planning at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Student feedback is informing discussions about learning spaces, extracurricular opportunities, school culture, wellness initiatives, and future priorities. NMC Thrive has also become an important source of evidence as the school reflects on student engagement and plans for continued improvement.

NMC Thrive is not a one-time project, it is becoming part of how we lead.

The initiative reflects a simple belief: schools are strongest when students are partners in creating them. Listening is important, but listening alone is not enough. Student voice becomes meaningful when it leads to shared action and visible change.

As educators, we often ask students to be engaged in their learning. NMC Thrive challenged us to be equally engaged in understanding their lived experiences.

The project has strengthened relationships throughout the school community. Students saw that their ideas were welcomed, teachers had opportunities to hear perspectives beyond the classroom, and school leaders gained valuable insight into both the strengths of our community and opportunities for growth.

At its heart, NMC Thrive is about hope.

It is about believing that every student deserves to feel seen, heard, valued, and connected.

It is about building a school community with students, not simply for them.

As Nelson McIntyre Collegiate continues to grow, the mural will continue to welcome students each day, standing as a reminder that every brushstroke represents a voice, every layer represents a story, and together those stories create a school community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
