Bring Back Recess!
Breaks are beneficial not only to younger children in middle school but also to students in grades 7–12. Incorporating recess into high school schedules helps reduce stress, improve focus, and general mental wellness. Teenagers are under heavy academic pressure, and a short, controlled break allows them to recharge, socialize, and return to class more energized and ready to study. Moving around and getting active during a break improves cognitive performance, allowing students to retain information and stay focused. With growing concerns about adolescent mental health, implementing recess is a simple, effective step towards a healthier, more balanced school day. Our Take Action project will offer some Interdisciplinary classes a recess break and survey students involved about the impact.
