H.S. Paul School Cell Phone Policy
H. S. Paul School Cell Phone Policy
All staff and students at H. S. Paul must follow the terms of Policy IJNDC – Internet and Information Systems Use: Staff and Students.
The following school cell phone/device policy has been established in accordance with the Manitoba Government’s new (2024) ministerial guidelines on cell phone use to:
• create a focused and conducive learning environment
• align our school with new provincial guidelines
• align with LRSD Policy GBEF/JICJ: Use of Cell Phones in Schools
• further foster a safe, caring, respectful and inclusive school
• enhance student focus, reduce distractions, and promote healthy social interactions without the distractions of cell phones
Cell Phone Usage:
• Cell phones are not permitted for use during school hours (8:25 a.m. – 2:58 p.m.), including lunchtime or recess breaks.
• Cell phone use in change rooms and washrooms is prohibited.
• Consent is always required before any audio/video recording of another person
• Cell phone use is prohibited during a lockdown.
• Cell phones at school should be kept turned off or in “Do Not Disturb” or “Silent Mode”.
Storage:
• All Grades 7/8 students must keep their cell phones locked in their lockers during school hours.
• Students in K-6 must keep their devices in their backpacks during the school day.
• Students are responsible for securing cell phones in their designated areas.
Exceptions:
• Cell phone use will be approved for special circumstances, such as medical needs, or specific learning needs and documented in student Health Care Plans or Student Specific Plans.
• Grades 7/8 students travelling to Practical Arts may take their devices with them for purposes of emergency use during transition from H. S. Paul to Practical Arts. Upon arrival at Practical Arts class, devices must be stored in student backpacks or in spaces designated by the Practical Arts teacher.
• Staff use of their personal devices is limited to the staff room or other designated spaces during the day. Some staff may be required to use their phone during the day for work purposes (e.g. communication, visual supports, translation). When needed for their role or student programming/support, staff are permitted to use their phone during the day.
Enforcement:
• Staff will monitor students’ appropriate use of cell phones. If a cell phone is being used at an inappropriate time, staff will ask for it to be put away. If this becomes a reoccurring problem, further steps will be taken, including communication with guardians when necessary.
Parent-Child Communication:
• Parents and guardians are encouraged to communicate with their children before and after school hours, utilizing designated times for phone contact.
• If information needs to be shared with a student during the school day, parents/guardians are welcome to phone the school office (204-254-7477).
The school is not responsible for damage or theft of cell phones, like any other personal items. School staff will support students in following the guidelines of this policy, as it is understood that it is in place to support their learning. Your cooperation and support in implementing this policy are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for helping us create a positive learning environment that supports appropriate use of cell phones and devices.
