April 22 is National French Immersion Day, a celebration of the learning, connection, and community fostered through French Immersion programs across Canada.
In LRSD, French Immersion is a strong and valued program that plays an important role in student learning across the division. We are always striving to improve our programming and make it more accessible, as laid out in LRSD’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan, specifically Strategic Action 2.5.
This year, we introduced Late French Immersion, allowing students to enter the program in Grade 6. Together with our Middle French Immersion program that begins in Grade 4, these options make French Immersion more accessible for families.
To support classroom celebrations, the Association canadienne des professionnels de l’immersion (ACPI) has released a classroom-ready activity toolkit developed with teachers. The resource includes creative activities for all grade levels that invite students to reflect on what bilingualism means to them.
Schools and classrooms are invited to share how they are celebrating by posting photos, student work, or stories using #JNIF2026 and tagging @ACPI, or by emailing clabelle@acpi.ca.
National French Immersion Day is an opportunity to celebrate the students, staff, and families who make language learning vibrant in LRSD—and to recognize language as a meaningful link to well-being, connection, and student success.
