On February 12, 13, & 18, Grade 7 & 8 students went to the Youth BIOLab at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. The Youth BIOLab is a space for students and teachers to explore and experience real biomedical science in a world-class research centre. Students had the opportunity to explore the heart from the whole organism down to the cells. They toured research labs and then had the opportunity to see a basic cell culture technique using live cells (fibroblasts) to create an understanding of cell scale and specialization in the heart. Students also performed a basic pig heart dissection to explore the heart structure, cardiovascular disease, and cardiac research. This was a great way to wrap up the unit on the heart and circulatory system.
