at ÉSCS regularly work on weaving Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into their
day-to-day activities with their classes. Thursday January 28th was
Bell Let’s Talk Day, and many classes took the extra opportunity to focus on
the important topic of mental health. Among the many impactful activities that
took place on this day in our school, students in Mme Klowak’s Grade French
Immersion 1 class spent time reading and sharing on the topic of the many
emotions we all experience, and the importance of sharing our feelings with one
another. Students practiced the French vocabulary for the different emotions and looked at images of
different facial expressions, paying attention to how our faces can convey emotion –
in particular, what changes happen in our eyes, eyebrows and mouth when we feel
a certain way. The
students then tried their hand at drawing these facial expressions, first on
white boards and then on paper. Together, the class put together a video,
featuring their drawings, the French names for the emotions, and the key
message that our feelings matter and should be shared.
