Austism Awareness at ÉSCS

April 6, 2021

École Sage Creek School is consistently looking for authentic ways to raise awareness about various meaningful causes to our students.  Earlier in the year, one of our Educational Assistants, Timon Kozelko, approached us with a way to promote Autism Awareness at ÉSCS.  See below for information that Timon has prepared for our community!

Dear École Sage Creek families,

My name is Timon Kozelko and I am an Educational Assistant, as well as one of the crossing guards, at École Sage Creek School. I work in various classrooms in one of our cohorts to promote a sense of belonging and to ensure that each student tries to achieve their learning goals, big or small, to the best of their ability.

Like many of our students, I have autism.  My spectrum of autism mostly deals with anxiety, but thanks to my journey through the education system, it has really helped me succeed in finding the balance and happiness that makes my life so enjoyable. It has led me to long lasting friendships, a wonderful full-time job working with awesome colleagues and your wonderful children, but it has also given me the skills to cope with everyday life.

I am so fortunate to have had the support that I did.  As many of you may know, some people like me or those who have more severe forms of autism, sometimes have a hard time finding stability in their everyday lives, including the stability of trying to find a job after high school.

I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to try to help people like me who have autism, by trying to raise awareness in the setting where I was able to achieve success and find the stability that has made my life so enjoyable.

April is Autism Awareness Month and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to raise awareness in our school and do it by showing our awesome Coyote spirit in the process. Our plan as a school, is to host an Autism Awareness day on Friday, April 9th.  Some examples of our plan for that day include:

  • Blue shirt day: We are encouraging all students and staff to wear blue on this day.  Blue is the colour associated with Autism Awareness Month and it would symbolize our goal to promote inclusion and support for people with autism.
  • Donation for "Inclusion Manitoba": We are also asking for students to consider bringing a donation for a charity called "Inclusion Manitoba".  "Inclusion Manitoba" is a charity that supports our goal of helping to ensure success for all students with exceptionalities by giving them the support, resources and tools they need.  Any donation would be appreciated.  Students will give their donation to their classroom teacher who will then submit them to the office.
  • Speaking: Some teachers have expressed an interest in having me speak about my experience living with autism and how I have succeeded thanks to the education system.  To respect cohorts, any speaking will be done by video.  To ensure this is age-appropriate, for the younger classes that invite me, I will be reading a picture book while for the older students, I will share some information related to my experience in school.  The purpose of these discussions is to share how we can all get involved to help make our classrooms and our school inclusive for all.

I want to conclude by saying thank you. It is because of your willingness to support causes, such as this one, that people like me can succeed as learners.  More importantly, they can also succeed in their everyday life because they have the tools and resources to help them succeed. I am so happy that I have been able to work with and see how wonderful the community of Sage Creek is.  Thank you, in advance, for your support in promoting Autism Awareness.
