Nelson McIntyre Collegiate student, Mattie Leslie-Toogood, awarded $80,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship

May 17, 2021

Manhattan Leslie-Toogood has been selected to receive an $80,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship, the largest Canadian STEM scholarship in Canada, to study sciences at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.

"This scholarship will have a huge impact on not only my university experience but also my educational and personal development. It provides me with the opportunity to challenge myself through new experiences and get outside of my comfort zone by moving away from my hometown," said Manhattan. "It also gives me the freedom to foster my love for the sciences, continue exercising my love for learning and explore my passions throughout university without added financial stress. "

Teachers at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate share that, "While she does have stellar grades, it is her humble and caring personality that sets her apart. From the very beginning, Mattie embraced Nelson McIntyre's interdisciplinary project-based teaching model. Younger students should look at her outstanding accomplishment and realize that a dedication to learning can result in great things.  Anyone who knows Mattie would describe her as compassionate, hardworking, and very modest in her accomplishments. Everyone at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate wishes her the best as she begins this new educational journey."

Given the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Schulich Leader Scholarships Canada decided to award an additional 50 scholarships in 2021, for a total of 100.  "We are proud to celebrate 10 years of Schulich Leader Scholarships, the premiere STEM scholarship program in Canada and the world," said Seymour Schulich, program founder. "We congratulate Leslie-Toogood on her selection as a Schulich Leader at Dalhousie as she is now part of a group of 100 outstanding students who represent the best and brightest Canada has to offer and will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With her university expenses covered, Leslie-Toogood can focus on her studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures."

About Schulich Leader Scholarships Canada

Recognizing the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich established this $100+ million scholarship fund in 2012 to encourage our best and brightest students to become Schulich Leader Scholars: the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators.

Through The Schulich Foundation, these prestigious entrance scholarships are awarded to 100 high school graduates in 2021, who are enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at 20 partner universities in Canada. Every high school in Canada can submit one Schulich Leader Nominee per academic year based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership, and financial need.
