February is I Love to Read Month. Every February, we put a special emphasis on promoting a love of reading in our school. This year marks a special event, the launch of I Read Canadian Day, on February 19th. The I Read Canadian project was designed to empower families, schools, public libraries, and organizations to support our local creatives while promoting literacy.
Canadian author Eric Walters felt that libraries were being overwhelmed with American literature. He teamed up with the Ontario Library Association, the Canadian Children's Book Centre, and CANSCAIP to start the I Read Canadian project. Eric Walters visited École Julie-Riel in October of 2019, and excited students with an energetic presentation about the many books he has written, including Elephant Secret, which is a MYRCA (Manitoba Young Reader`s Choice Award) nominee this year.
During the week of February 18th, staff and students will be participating in a variety of fun activities to promote reading, writing, and sharing. Some of these activities include Lingo Bingo, a Book Ladder to count how many books our school can read and a guess what book is in the jar game. We are also proud to say that école Julie-Riel will participate in a Drop Everything and Read time February 19th along with hundreds of other schools nationwide. The library will feature a display about Canadian authors, and students will be encouraged to check out books specifically written or illustrated by Canadians.
We are looking forward to I Love to Read Month and making our first I Read Canadian Day a success with the students.
