February Highlights

February 23, 2021

La Joie de vivre was evident this month at École Julie-Riel as we celebrated reading, friendship, French culture, and kindness!

Mme Godbout kicked off our celebration of I love to Read Month with a read aloud of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Mme Nicolette produced PowerPoints of students and staff reading and these were shared on the big screen in the front foyer. There was also a challenge to read 100 minutes with prizes to be won! In honour of Black History Month, Mme Carrière read Meet Viola Desmond to Mme Denise's grade 2 class. What an inspiring story! FYI, Viola Desmond is on our $10 dollar bill.

On Friday, February 12th, Valentine's Day was celebrated at École Julie-Riel. Many families contributed to making the day extra special, and the excitement in our school warmed the hearts of students and staff! The primary grades also celebrated 100 days at school with various activities and challenges.

The week of February 15th-19th was filled with activities for the Festival du voyageur such as a presentation by Tibert le voyageur, Bingo, and Kahoot games on Teams. The pancake breakfast on February 12th and the bannock treat on February 19th were highlights! Inspired by Inuit artists in Nunavut, the grade 2 and 3 students displayed Inukshuks, Northern Lights and print making artwork in the hallways. The grade 1 classes focused on Ted Harrison's artwork and created their own masterpieces!

Lastly, from February 22nd – 26th, the students and staff celebrated Pink Shirt Day for a week! Students were encouraged to display acts of kindness and we all had fun dressing up according to the theme of the day.

Despite Covid and because of Covid, our leadership, staff, and students have found meaningful ways to learn, engage, connect, and celebrate. February was truly a month of joy!
