Our own Karen Burkett has been awarded the Teacher Librarian of the Year award by the Manitoba School Library Association. Karen works tirelessly in her role as teacher librarian here at Hastings. While the largest portion of her job is here, she also supports 3 other schools in the division. Indeed, her ability to weave effortlessly between the schools providing instructional support and leadership is commendable. Here at Hastings, Karen's leadership is visible in the many initiatives she develops and supports. She is the instructional leader spearheading many of our school based themes and providing the necessary resources to enhance classroom based learning. Karen supports individual classes through the development of project based learning activities to support and enhance classroom learning.
Karen loves to incorporate technology into her role here at Hastings and this is evident in the projects she works on. From Green Screen technology to Claymation movies, Karen is always willing to invest in the development of new and engaging mediums. She is a learner at heart, always trying to keep on top of the latest technologies to support learning.
Karen plays a critical role in the development of our school assemblies and always plays an important role in schoolwide activities, often working long hours behind the scenes to make sure things go off without a hitch. Her Learning Commons space here at Hasting is a hub of activity and her yearly MYRCA club has been expanded to the divisional Level engaging young readers from Hastings and beyond.
