Student Vote

October 5, 2021

On September 20, the grade 4/5 of Mme Cook's class practiced exercising their voting rights by participating in the federal Student Vote campaign. The students studied each of the candidates in the Winnipeg South riding. The results were close between all the candidates, with the incumbent Terry Duguid winning the class vote by only 2 ballots! It was great to see the students getting engaged and learning about the federal parties.

During the week of September 28 – October 1, École Julie-Riel observed Truth and Reconciliation Week. We began the week with a virtual assembly where a trilingual version of the national anthem was played. This was followed by an in-class reading of "When I Was Eight".

On Wednesday, students were encouraged to wear orange in recognition of Residential School survivors and their families. Students were given orange yarn bracelets to wear so we could all show support with the symbolic orange color.

On Friday, students reflected on what they need to feel safe and welcome at school. Following this reflection, they decorated a feather as part of a school-wide collaborative art project. The project is on display in the main foyer.

We look forward to continuing our discussions and learning more about Truth and Reconciliation. We all have a role and responsibility in making a difference.
