National Truth and Reconciliation Days September 27th - October 1st, 2021

September 24, 2021

National Truth and Reconciliation Days

(September 27th – October 1st 2021)

Truth and Reconciliation Days is a 5-day national event that gives Canadians the opportunity to continue the conversations around Indigenous treaties, First Nation, Métis and Inuit land claims, and the Residential schools system.

September 30th, 2021 marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Prior to this year, we referred to the day as « Orange Shirt Day ». We encourage families to discuss with your child, in a gentle manner, what churches and government did in the past to Indigenous children, how they were forced into colonial religion and culture and treated very badly, which caused a lot of trauma. Then let them know that there is a lot more to these stories, but that they will learn more about these details when they are older. Here is a great article from Today's Parent on how to approach the question of residential schools with your children: https://www.todaysparent.com/kids/school-age/why-our-kids-need-to-learn-about-residential-schools/ .

École Julie-Rill will be honouring the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities as part of the reconciliation process.

Here are some activities that we have planned for next week:

September 28th:  All-School virtual assembly & classes will be reading the book When I was eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton

Septembre 29th:  Orange Shirt/Clothing Day

September 30th:  National Truth and Reconciliation Day (No School)

October 1st:  Orange feather art project & orange ribbon day (in each class)

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak to your child's teacher.

School Administration,

Lyette Carrière & Nanette Godbout
