Treaty Acknowledgement

In September 2017, student leaders from Grades 5 and 6 worked with Indigenous Education teacher Flora-Lee Trueman to develop statements recognizing that Indigenous peoples previously lived on the land upon which our school stands. Students presented the statements in both English and French at a school-wide assembly. At their request, the statements also form part of the morning announcements on the first day of the school week. This initiative supports our school plan goals related to reconciliation and sustainable development.

École Guyot would like to acknowledge that we are on Treaty One Territory. We recognize that this land is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and the homeland of the Red River Metis. With this acknowledgement, we demonstrate respect for Indigenous people and we celebrate our relationship with one another.

These statements of Treaty Recognition remind students of the important commitments made by their ancestors. It is hoped that their integration into weekly practice will contribute to the development of intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect that Call to Action #63 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission seeks to create in every classroom.
