Grade 10

​English Language Arts: Foundations (E20F)​ 1 credit

Prerequisite:  English Language Arts 10F

This course is designed to increase the students' knowledge of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing. 

Students will:

  • expand their knowledge of literary concepts as they continue to build their skills and knowledge of informal and formal essays and fictional forms of writing
  • study news and magazine articles, short stories, film, poetry, novels and complete projects throughout the semester.
  • continue to learn the importance of the proper use of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary.

 

English Language Arts: Dual Credit Path (E20F-DCP) 1 credit

Prerequisite:  English Language Arts 10F

Grade 10 Dual Credit Path English is a fast-paced, intensive course designed to meet the learning needs of those students seeking to attain Dual Credit in Grade 12 (Dual credit allows student to gain 6 credit hours of University level English in addition to the high school credit).

Students will:

  • develop a deeper understanding of purpose and audience as they study and create both pragmatic/practical texts and aesthetic (literary) texts.
  • expect a wide variety of approaches to the material, from personal writing and independent research to formal oral debates and live drama.

 

Grade 11

English Language Arts: Comprehensive Focus (ECOMF30S) 1 credit

Prerequisite:  English Language Arts 20F

This course is designed to build on and extend the student's knowledge of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing.

Students will:

  • Study and create pragmatic (practical) texts and aesthetic (literary) texts.
  • continue to develop the proper use of the conventions of grammar, spelling and vocabulary will continue to be stressed.

English Language Arts: Comprehensive Focus: Dual Credit Path(ECOMF30S-DCP) 1 credit

Prerequisite:  English Language Arts 20F

Grade 11 Dual Credit Path English is a fast-paced, intensive course designed to meet the learning needs of those students seeking to attain Dual Credit in Grade 12 (Dual credit allows student to gain 6 credit hours of University level English in addition to the high school credit).

Students will:

  • Study and create pragmatic (practical) texts and aesthetic (literary) texts.
  • study a wide range of literature from Shakespeare's Macbeth to an analysis of popular media (film, television, Web 2.0).   

 

Grade 12

English Language Arts: Comprehensive Focus (ECOMF40S) 1 credit

Prerequisite:  English Language Arts ECOMF30S or ECOMF30S-DCP

Through reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing this course offers students the opportunity to practice and hone the skills developed in high school English Language Arts.

Students will:

  • study and create a wide and varied range of texts from practical/pragmatic texts like newspaper articles and documentaries and essays, to aesthetic/literary texts like poetry, film and novels.
  • participate in oral and written assignments, as well as individual, small group and whole class activities.
  • be supported with class time to prepare for the Provincial English Exam worth 30% of the final grade.
