Commemorating September 30th at Home

September 29, 2021

For the first time, September 30th has become a federally recognized Stat day, allowing time to reflect on the harms of the Residential "School" system and committing to concrete actions of reconciliation.

Not sure where to start? Here are some resources and ideas for recognizing September 30th at home (this is by no means an exhaustive list):

Read, listen, and talk:

Listen to Wanbdi Wakita, an elder working with our divisional community, share some of his experiences as a residential school survivor, and his thoughts on reconciliation (trigger warning: abuse):

Read books by Indigenous authors:

Learn about access-to-clean-water issues near home:

Learn about the traditional territories on which you live:

Familiarize yourself with the 94 Calls to Action, and see government progress on each one:

Hear what other people are doing, including members of our Collège Béliveau staff:

Visit the site of a former residential school:

Walk the Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive trail:

Give through donation or time (these are but a few organizations):

Thank you Manitoba for a beautiful day hike on the Spirit Sands & Devils Punch Bowl Trail in the Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Love seeing the reaction of our Outdoor Education students when seeing parts of our province for the first time.
