It is hard to believe but June has arrived and with it brought a frenzy of activity! We have so many exciting field trips, activities and events planned for June – please use our school website calendar to stay up to date.

One event you want to be sure not to miss is our Community BBQ on June 21st.  Please come and join us for all kinds of free activities such as field games, bouncy castles, hamster ball races, face painting and so much more. Hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie dogs, chips and drinks are available at the event but if possible please preorder using the form which will be sent home with your child.

On June 22nd we will celebrate and learn about Indigenous culture by participating in school wide activities and sessions.  We are looking forward to hosting many divisional guests on that day as they share their knowledge and teaching with us.

Another very important event in June is our Grade 8 Farewell.  Please save the afternoon of
June 26th to join in this celebration - more detailed information will be coming home soon.

As much as June is a time of celebration and reflection, it is also a time for good byes and see you soons. This June we will be saying goodbye to Ms. Meyer, Mrs. Carey, Mr. Viewheg and Mr. Campbell.   Ms. Meyer will be reconnecting with some of our Archwood alumni as she joins the teaching staff of Windsor Park Collegiate. Mrs. Carey will be moving to Lavallee School as their early intervention reading teaching. Mr. Viewheg will be joining the student services team at Hastings School and Mr. Campbell will be finishing his term at Archwood as Ms. Sutcliffe returns from her extended maternity leave. We want to thank these teachers for all that they have contributed to Archwood School and wish them all the best in their new adventures! We will be saying see you soon to Ms. Hewitt who will be away on maternity leave for the next school year. We will be welcoming Ms. Hewitt and her new baby back in the fall as our next "Roots of Empathy" family. We look forward to seeing you!

This means a number of changes for Archwood School next year. We will be welcoming back Ms. Marks to Grade 3/4 and Mrs. Halford will be taking on Ms. Hewitt's Grade 5/6 maternity leave. Mrs. Fedoruk will be moving to Grade 7/8 here at Archwood and we will welcome Ms. Stafford to Grade 5/6.  We are very excited to have them all be a part of our Archwood family.

At this time, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our Archwood students and their families for an amazing year.  The year has simply flown by and I have so enjoyed getting to know and work with you.  I look forward to another exciting year next year and wish you all a wonderful summer holiday!

Relax, enjoy and see you soon!

Goodbye April, Hello May!

hello-may-12-300x200.jpg

Yes, it is May and spring is officially here and the Archwood School community continues to be buzzing with amazing activities for our students and families.

As part of our Family of Schools, staff from Archwood have been working with staff from Frontenac, General Vanier, Windsor Park, Ecole Sage Creek School and the Louis Riel Arts and Technology Centre.  On April 20th we spent the day together creating and continuing connections for further collaborative work, learning about the exciting things happening at each other's schools and continuing to build community.

Our students in Grade 5 have been learning all about basic cooking and kitchen safety through the Kid's in the Kitchen Program.  They have had so much fun trying out new recipes and exploring new foods.  Ask them, about their favourite recipe – maybe they can do some cooking for you at home!

On Wednesday, April 25th, the band students for Archwood School performed in our very first band festival at the Canadian Mennonite University.  This was a very proud moment for all of us – our students performed wonderfully, were so proud of all their hard work and most importantly, saw themselves as musicians! A huge thank you to Ms. Burns for her efforts and dedication and especially her belief in our musicians – it was a very memorable day!

Please mark your calendars with a couple of important Archwood Parent Advisory Council activities.  On May 10th we will be hosting a family reggae performance. We hope to be outside, so bring your lawn chair and blankets and come join us for a great evening of entertainment. Also on June 21st we will be hosting a community barbeque.  We will have tons of fun planned - including a petting zoo, bouncy castle, hamster ball races as well as lots of games and fun for everyone.

We have great news to share from the office at Archwood.  We are very excited that next fall Lisa McLellan Bowes will be joining us as a vice principal.  Lisa is currently a student services teacher at Glenlawn Collegiate and we are thrilled to have her join our Archwood family!

As the year winds up our students will be participating in tons of fun activities in and out of the classroom.  Please be sure to send them with appropriate clothing for the weather including hats, water bottles and sunscreen – we know they are going to have a great time.

Enjoy the sunshine and we hope to see you soon!

It's Spring!

Boggabri-spring-fair-2018.jpg

Spring Has Sprung

Welcome back to all our families - we hope you all had a wonderful spring break! It is hard to believe but spring is here and we are already starting to make plans for the next school year.

We would like to thank all our parents for joining us on parent conference night in March.  Our students were certainly proud to show their families all that they have accomplished so far this year! Special congratulations to our students in Grade 7 and 8.  Their social justice inquiry projects were simply amazing! Each student worked hard to share a project they were passionate about and create awareness for a variety of issues. On March 22nd, we were treated to a wonderful musical performance by Ms. Burns and our Grade 5-8 classes. Our students' musical talents certainly shone though as they performed a variety of musical pieces for us all to enjoy.  It was amazing to see how much they have learned and how far they have come in a short period of time.  We are looking forward to them performing at the Band Festival on April 25th. We would love for you to come and hear us play!

Now that spring is here and all our snow is melting, our students are spending a lot more time outside.  Please be sure to dress your children ready to play outdoors and possibly get wet – rain boots, splash pants and a change of clothes are always a good idea!

At the end of April we will wrap up our I Love to Read activities by treating all of our students to a book from the McNally Robinson Bookstore.  We would like to thank the Louis Riel School Board and our Coordinator of Library Services, Kathy Atkin for supporting this memorable outing.  Our students will be so excited to tour the bookstore and be able to pick out and bring home their very own book.

Please mark your calendars for May 10th – along with the Archwood Parent Council, we will be hosting our first Archwood Reggae Night.  We will have a guest reggae artist performing and hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will be able to have our convert outdoors. We hope to see all our families out to join us as we have a great show for everyone to enjoy.

As always, please be in touch if you have any questions or concerns.reggae.jpg

It's March - but is it spring?

march+3.jpg

Welcome to March and hopefully spring! Archwood School continues to be buzzing with fun and educational activities for our students and their families.

February was a great month for us to celebrate "I Love to Read" at Archwood School. We had many exciting guest readers come and join us and share their love of reading with our students. To connect "I Love to Read" with the Winter Olympics, we tried to see if we could read all the way Pyeong Chang, South Korea by converting time spent reading into kilometers along the way to South Korea.  Our students did an amazing job and had a lot of fun sharing their favourite books.

We also had a whole school Olympic Day on February 16th.  Our students had a great day learning to curl, ice dance, luge, skate and play hockey. We had a couple of very special guests join us that day, one of them being LRSD's own Chantal Givens who competed in the triathlon in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. Our students were so excited to meet her and listen to her story!

Basketball season at Archwood School is wrapping up and our students have made us so proud.  They have really come together as a team and greatly improved their basketball skills.  Both the boys and girls played in a tournament and had a great time.  A special thank you to our volunteer coaches who have spent so much time with our athletes and shared with them their passion for basketball which has transferred to our students who are now sharing their love of the game!

Report cards will be sent home on Friday, March 9th and parent conferences will be held on Thursday, March 15th.  Please book a time to meet with your child's teacher using Conference Manager.  If you need any assistance, booking an appointment please give us a call in the office and we will be happy to assist.  We look forward to seeing all our student and their parents on March 15th.

We have many more exciting activities planned for Archwood School over the next few months! As always, please be in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

So Much to Celebrate in February

Reading-I-Love-To-Read-2mm994k.png

Archwood School has a lot of great news to share! One of the biggest pieces of news is that after the winter break we were able to add an additional kindergarten class in the afternoon. Our morning kindergarten class was very large and we are continuing to grow.  With the support of the Louis Riel School Division board office, we moved half of the students to the afternoon and were very lucky Mrs. Zebrynski was able to pick up this class! We are very appreciative of all the support from our families in making this move.

In February, we will have three new additions joining our family at Archwood. First of all, we are very lucky to have Tiffany from the NEEDS Centre joining us.  She will be splitting her time between Archwood and Frontenac providing support and recreational programming for some of our newcomer students and their families.  We look forward to welcoming Tiffany to Archwood.

In other good news, we are pleased to share that we will have a therapy dog visiting us here at school.  Through the "Special Paws, Special Kids" program at St. John's Ambulance, Janis will be bringing her labradoodle Remi to Archwood School.  Janis and Remi will be working with small groups of students once a week – be sure to look for them in our hallways to say hello. We can't wait for them to start visiting!

Have you seen our basketball team lately?  Basketball season has started and our girls and boys teams are having a blast! They are learning a lot and having a great time.  The girls played in a tournament at Hastings School and the boys have one coming up at Linden Meadows school.  Thank you for representing us so well – we hope you have a great season!

During February, we will be celebrating "I Love to Read" month here at Archwood.  We are looking forward to some special activities, guest readers and reading as many books as we can.  We will be combining our love of reading with this year's winter Olympics.  We are going to see if we can read ourselves all the way to Pyeongchang, Korea.  We will be hosting a school wide Olympics Day on February 16th.  Look forward to hearing about our journey across the world as we celebrate the Olympic spirit.

Welcome to November

We continue to have many exciting events and learning opportunities occurring in the school and in the community! We were so proud of our students who performed in Choral Celebration at the concert hall on October 18th. Our students did a great job of learning new and challenging music in a very short period of time and loved being on such at fancy stage.

Archwood Parent Advisory Council hosted the first movie night of the year where we has lots of watchers enjoying popcorn and the movie "Moana" – it was really fun to listen to the students singing along to the movie! APAC also prepared and hosted the first hot lunch of the year which was a big success.  Stay tuned for details about the next lunch which will be sent home shortly.

Archwood in Motion (AIM) has started up again this year.  This year AIM is running on Thursdays for boys and girls combined.  Any students in Grades 4-6 that would like to join us, please see the office for more information. Girl Guides has also begun for girls in Grades 1-8.  We still have a few openings if you would like to join us Mondays after school.

Our Grade 7 and 8 students enjoyed a day all about youth activism at this year's WE Day on October 25th. We looking forward to hearing all about the social justice initiatives they take on over the school year!

We have lots of great plans for November as well. First being Peace Workshops on November 9th.  The day will be spent moving through a number of stations based on peace and friendship.  We will welcome several guest presenters to help us throughout the day and look forward to a great day of learning, thinking and reflection.

Teachers at Archwood are busy writing report cards which will be sent home on November 17th.  Please join us on November 23rd for Parent Conferences.  Conference appointments can be made online on conference manager or by calling the office at 204 233-7983.  During the evening of parent conferences our community health nurses will be at the school to provide free flu shots to students and parents. If you or your child would like to receive a flu shot, please bring your Manitoba Health card with you that evening.

As always, please be in touch with any questions or concerns.

Hope to see you soon!         Flu-Shot.jpg

Fall is here!

Fall is here! It is hard to believe that we have already been back at school for four weeks! There are so many exciting things happening at Archwood School to share…

Classrooms are up and definitely running – class contracts have been created, kindness buckets are being filled, students are learning about each other and creating classroom contracts.  Our students have been learning about the impacts of residential schools and on September 29th, will be wearing orange shirts to show that "Every Child Matters." We were excited to have over 20 students participate in our first Cross Country event at St. Vital Park and have two more races still to come. Our Grade 7 and 8 students have begun Practical Arts at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate and are enjoying hands on learning in the foods and nutrition, metals, clothing and woods labs.  Our lunch time dance club for Grades 5-8 has started up and we would love to have more students come and join us.

October will certainly prove to be just as busy! Over the next few weeks we have volleyball, AIM and Archwood's Community Kitchen starting up again.  Please look for notices coming  home explaining and inviting you to these fun events.

I would like to thank you for your support in making this year's start up a wonderful one! Please take the time to call, email or stop by the office to stay hello.  I look forward to meeting many more members of the Archwood community as we continue to work together to make this school and this school year a great one!

All the best!
