LRSD Programming Out of Monterey
Louis Riel School Division’s (LRSD) Programming Out of Monterey provides a short-term, transitional learning space for students in grades 7–12 whose social, emotional, or behavioral needs require a temporary change in environment. This programming reflects LRSD’s commitment to inclusive, responsive, relationship-based education and aligns with Strategic Action 3.5 of the Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP): Create a flexible, short-term learning and therapeutic space for students needing to be away from their home school to support their successful return to a classroom. Low enrolment and a collaborative referral process help ensure an appropriate adult-to-student ratio, as home schools work together with the program to support student needs.
Grounded in the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS), the programming at Monterey prioritizes emotional safety, relational connection, and individualized support. TCIS serves as the philosophical foundation for Student Services work across LRSD, guiding our efforts to create environments where students feel safe, seen, and valued.
Our approach is deeply informed by the Circle of Courage values—Belonging, Mastery, Generosity, and Independence—which shape every aspect of our work with students and caregivers. These values are also reflected in LRSD’s MYSP, which emphasizes equity, well-being, and student-centered learning.
What Caregivers Can Expect:
- Learning Plans co-developed with clinical, educational, and cultural supports.
- Flexible daily schedules that meet students where they are emotionally and academically.
- Land-based and life skills programming, both on-site and off-site, to promote holistic development.
- Culturally grounded practices that reflect Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
- Wraparound supports including social work, psychology, occupational therapy, and community partnerships with organizations like The Link.
- Evening and weekend programming, as well as the potential for continued connection to clubs, extracurriculars, and courses at the student’s home school.
- Transportation and accessibility planning to minimize disruption and maximize engagement.
Monterey programming is temporary by design, with a focus on healing, stabilization, and reintegration. Reintegration plans are developed collaboratively with home school teams from the outset, and hybrid models may be explored to maintain continuity with home school programming.
High School Continuum of Supports
