Peter Bjornson
Ward 3
204.123.4567
Peter was elected in the Oct. 25, 2025, by-election for LRSD Ward 3.
Peter is a career educator with 22 years of classroom experience and 10 years in legislative, regulatory, and policy experience related to education. His education philosophy is that every student comes to school with a gift, and it is incumbent upon educators to give students the opportunity to explore their gifts, celebrate their gifts and be successful in the classroom. If a child doesn’t "fit" the system, the system must adapt to fit the child.
This belief has guided Peter through an award-winning career as a high school teacher (1990 to 2003), in his role as Minister of Education (2003 to 2009, and 2014 to 2015), and in his current role as an instructor in the Faculty of Education at The University of Winnipeg (2015 to present).
As a teacher, Peter valued a supportive administration that encouraged him to explore a variety of projects and initiatives to engage his students in active learning. As a teacher Peter also valued the incredible contributions of the Education Assistants (EAs), clerical staff, custodial staff, and other support staff to the school community. He is committed to ensuring that teachers and EAs have access to the best possible resources and professional development opportunities.
As Minister of Education, Peter was honoured to work with many stakeholder groups and was privileged to introduce the Safe Schools Act, the Inclusive Schools Act (Appropriate Education Programming), and the School Closure Moratorium. He recognized the important of school divisions in implementing provincial legislation and regulations and in developing policies to meet legislative requirements.
As an instructor at The University of Winnipeg, Peter has had the privilege to work with incredible teacher candidates and knows how important it is to ensure LRSD is able to recruit and retain teachers with the challenges of anticipated teacher shortages.
Peter is committed to an open, transparent and responsive board; a supportive and engaging learning community; and a focus on ensuring the best possible use of resources in challenging financial times.
