Student Support Services

In Louis Riel School Division, we believe every student should learn in an inclusive environment where they can participate meaningfully in programming that reflects their individual strengths and needs. School teams and divisional staff work closely with students and families to create appropriate educational plans grounded in collaboration and shared decision-making.

Each LRSD school has student services teachers who, alongside school administration and classroom teachers, coordinate supports that help create conditions where all learners can belong, engage, and succeed. Divisional clinicians and specialists further strengthen this work by offering expertise in areas such as speech-language pathology, psychology, social work, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy.

Together, these professionals form a responsive network that supports student growth across academic, social, emotional, behavioural, communicative, functional, and physical domains.

If parents or guardians have concerns about their child’s learning, they are encouraged to begin by speaking with the classroom teacher. The teacher will collaborate as needed with the school’s student services team and other support staff to explore strategies and determine next steps in planning and programming.

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a proactive framework that helps schools meet the needs of all students by identifying challenges early and providing the right support. It builds on the Response to Intervention (RTI) model, which uses a tiered approach to give extra help to students who need it. MTSS takes this further by looking at the bigger picture—school-wide practices and barriers that can impact learning for both students and educators. The goal is to create an inclusive, supportive environment for everyone.

In RTI, every student begins with strong, high-quality classroom instruction (Tier 1). If some students need more help, they receive targeted support in small groups (Tier 2). For students with more intensive needs, individualized support is provided (Tier 3)—while keeping them connected to the regular classroom. These supports are flexible and based on each student’s needs, not labels.

LRSD Clinical Services

The services of School Psychologists, School Social Workers, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists are available within each school.

These specialists work together with school staff and parents/guardians to support students who may require additional help in order to be successful learners. They may work with individual students, small groups, or provide classroom-based activities.

If you have questions about your child’s learning, physical, social-emotional development or mental health, please start by contacting your classroom teacher.
