Schools of Choice

The Schools of Choice initiative facilitates parental/student choice, within limits, in selecting the public school best suited to the student’s learning requirements.

These requests for transfers are considered at the School of Choice based on provincial guidelines, which state that schools enroll students in the following order of priority:

  1. Students designated to attend that school
  2. Students residing in the Louis Riel School Division
  3. Other Manitoba students

Acceptance is also based on school population, available space and resources following our divisional process, excerpts of which appear below:

APPLICATION PROCESS

School of choice requests are accepted for the next school year between February 1, 2026 and May 15, 2026

Within Division

New Online Application Process: If a student wishes to attend a school other than the designated catchment school within the school division, Parents/Guardians must apply to the potential receiving schools by completing the application form located in PowerSchool SIS, LRSD Forms. For questions regarding parent portal access, please visit Sign in help – Support Information. The form will be available on February 2nd at 8:30am when the portal opens for registration and will close on May 15th at 4:30pm.

All students applying for School of Choice (within division) must be registered in PowerSchool before submitting the online School of Choice application. Families should complete these steps in PowerSchool by May 15 to be considered for the next school year. 

Families will be informed of the decision on their application by May 31st each year. Where Schools of Choice applications are approved, families will be required to provide transportation to and from school. You will only need to complete the application once, if accepted; you do not need to reapply annually.

Students entering Kindergarten and other students new to LRSD

A paper copy of the School of Choice application form is available at the school office and may be submitted along with the new student registration form.

Paper copies of the School of Choice Within-Division form will remain available at the school office for accessibility purposes.

Out of Division

Parents/guardians wishing for their child to attend a school in a school division/district other than the school division in which they reside must fill out, sign, and submit a single copy of a School of Choice Out-of-Division/District application form to the potential “receiving” school no later than May 15. Hardcopies of the application form are available from any LRSD school. The form can be downloaded from the link below:

A hardcopy of the form must be dropped off or mailed to the school office. Note that forms will be date-stamped upon receipt and processed in accordance with provincial guidelines.
