Recently, Upside‑Down Iftar was purchased for some elementary school libraries and distribution had begun when concerns were raised about specific illustrations. The Division addressed the concern through the informal review process under Policy IJA. That informal review is now complete. The review considered the specific concern raised, the book as a whole, and its educational value and appropriateness for elementary students. No recommendation was made to withdraw the book from school or divisional use, and Upside‑Down Iftar is currently in circulation in elementary school libraries.
As part of completing the informal review, follow‑up conversations were held with the staff members who raised concerns to ensure their perspectives were heard and the outcome was communicated respectfully.
We recognize that the earlier interruption in access raised concerns in the community about censorship, erasure, and trust in the review process. One lesson we are taking forward is that when concerns are raised, the correct response is to route them immediately through Policy IJA while maintaining access. Temporarily setting aside a resource, even with the intent to listen and understand, can unintentionally create confusion and undermine trust. We are reinforcing this expectation going forward.
Families who have questions are encouraged to contact their school. Parents and caregivers continue to have choice about what their own children read. Our shared focus remains on welcoming, respectful learning environments where all students can learn and belong.
Louis Riel School Division is committed to school libraries that reflect a wide range of cultures, identities, and lived experiences, and to decision‑making that is consistent, transparent, and grounded in established policy.
