Victor Mager School is excited to announce that it has been chosen by Indigo Books as one of 30 schools across Canada to receive a 2019 Indigo Love of Reading Foundation Literacy Grant.
During a ceremony on May 30th, Indigo presented a cheque for $70,000 to the Victor Mager School Library Learning Commons. In addition to the $70,000 grant, which will be spent over three years, Indigo also gifted each student with a new book to add to their classroom libraries.
The grant cheque was accepted on behalf of Victor Mager School by a group of students who played an important role in obtaining the grant. Our grant application included a video in which students shared their insights about the importance of reading and the needs of our library learning commons collection.
Our successful application proposed a 3-year plan to refresh our school library collection to better reflect our richly diverse population and to better meet the needs of our new language learners. Our grant proposal also included the purchase of books and resources to further engage the multiple community-based organizations currently operating out of Victor Mager School, including the Victor Mager Family Centre, the Victor Mager Boys and Girls Club, and ASPIRE, our divisional summer literacy program.
Many thanks to the grant writing team and the students who participated in the video submission. An extra special thanks to all our teachers and students for showing their love of reading on May 30th by creating "My favourite book" headbands to wear during the presentation ceremony, as well as the oversized thank you cards to present to both our local literacy partner, Chapters St. Vital, and the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.
