On Monday, Nov. 9, Education Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced, “three additional non-instructional days [will be] added to the school calendar for the 2020-21 year so that schools can focus on collaborative planning as they shift and adapt to remote learning.”
Two of the three non-instructional days were required to be implemented into school division schedules before Christmas, and divisions were allowed to identify which days those would be.
After discussion with principals and vice-principals from across the division, Monday, Nov. 30 and Monday, Dec. 7 are the two days that have been selected for professional learning and dialogue for all employee groups in LRSD.
Even more so during a pandemic, LRSD staff must have the opportunity for collective reflection, creative thinking, and capacity building. A colleague reminded me this morning about how vital this time is to help us along our path as life-long learners. The word she shared with me was weetutoskemitowin
, the Cree word for “shared work among individuals” or “individual commitment to group effort.” This note brought a smile to my face.
The point is that we can’t do it alone—we are truly in it together.
Stay safe and be well.
