“Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.”
These words from the late Rita F. Pierson, a passionate educator with more than 40 years of experience, and a staunch anti-poverty advocate, feels especially poignant as we think about staff in LRSD and their collective desire to support each other and students during these unprecedented times.
We think “champion” is a great word to describe LRSD staff. We’ve heard from our community about your commitment to lifelong learning and people’s well-being and we’ve seen it with our own eyes (at the appropriate social distance, of course), too.
We want to acknowledge and celebrate every teacher and staff member who continually provides a safe, inclusive and engaging environment. And while this week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, it didn’t take a proclamation for us to recognize the hard-working, caring and compassionate people that are the heart of our division.
Teaching is a challenging profession, but it also has the biggest and most profound positive impact on society. As we work through these extraordinary times, every aspect of teaching and keeping schools safe has changed. Your roles have been redefined. Families have trusted us to keep their most precious gifts safe and you have risen to the challenge!
No matter what your role in LRSD, you have championed and supported students throughout this pandemic. For many students, school has been a sanctuary for them and that couldn’t have happened without you.
All of us on the LRSD Board of Trustees are proud of your work and innovation! We sincerely thank you!
