Hastings School has been referred to as "Home of the Hawks" for as long as anyone can remember...literally decades! The hawk "mascot" is on the school logo, on the gymnasium walls, on any school letters home and on social media. But it did not have a name!
After some research, it was determined that the most likely hawk to be found in this part of Winnipeg/Manitoba/Canada is the red-tailed hawk. (Check out the link to see all the hawks that can be found in our area.) We were very lucky to be able to find a red-tailed hawk stuffie from a local supplier. It arrived this week!
Over the past while, in anticipation of the stuffed hawk arriving to the school, students have been offering suggestions for the hawk's name. The first round of choices included names like Tony, Gary, Hank, Toquito, Princess Cupcake, Fluffy...to name but a few.
Four names were mentioned more than once. They were Harley, Hawkins, Hawkeye and Hank. Students were then given these narrowed down choices and asked to vote on which one they would like. It was a VERY close race, but in the end, "Hawkins" had the most votes.
At the moment, Hawkins "lives" in the library...but keep your eyes peeled. It's hard to keep a hawk in one spot, so you may see him at various spots in the school.
Now we can not only say, "Go Hawks Go!". We can also say, "Go Hawkins Go!".
