The Louis Riel School Division is proud to recognize its amazing team of payroll professionals during National Payroll Week
. Behind the scenes and hard at work are a team of extremely dedicated individuals who make sure that all LRSD employees get paid consistently, accurately and on time!
Marna Kenny is the Secretary-Treasurer for LRSD. "Being paid accurately and on schedule is something that happens because of our payroll team. We want to thank them for all that they do, this week and throughout the year," she says.
The Payroll Department is made up of a manager, coordinators and an executive assistant:
- Gisele Mravec – Manager of Payroll and Benefits
- Patrice San Filippo – Payroll Coordinator – Casual and Sub Payroll
- Sandra Delavau – Payroll Coordinator – Support Staff Payroll
- Maurice Levesque – Payroll Coordinator – Teacher Payroll
- Tracy Hebert – Payroll Coordinator – EA Payroll
- Heather McFadyen – Benefits Coordinator
- Susan Potter – Executive Assistant
Gisele Mravec is the Manager of Payroll and Benefits for LRSD and has been with the Division for almost 34 years. "I am extremely proud and fortunate to be working with such a caring, compassionate team," she says. "They go over and beyond the call of duty for the employees of the Division and sometimes it requires some sacrifices. Sometimes it isn't an 8:30 am to 4:30 pm job."
Mravec says they have a system in place for payroll to run smoothly. But sometimes that system isn't perfect and it's the team that ensures LRSD employees are paid accurately and on time. Mravec remembers one employee that stayed to finish payroll even though a family member had passed away.
"I hold them close to my heart because they give their everything," says Mravec.
Maurice Levesque is the Payroll Coordinator for 1,100 permanent and term teachers. He has worked with LRSD for a decade and is one of the newer employees in the department. Two other team members have worked for the Division for over 30 years.
"You get used to working with deadlines. I like the goal of paying people and the challenges we have to get all the details right," says Levesque.
To get those details right, Levesque and the other members of the Payroll Department work alongside Human Resources and Accounting. They also work with a number of external agencies including but not limited to Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, the Manitoba Teachers' Society, the Louis Riel Teachers' Association, the Professional Certification and Student Records Unit of Manitoba Education and Training (to verify teacher classification and experience), and the Teachers' Retirement Allowance Fund (the pension plan for public school teachers in Manitoba).
September is a busy month for the entire Payroll Department, especially this year as they just upgraded their database systems this past summer.
With all those details and deadlines to worry about, what keeps them here?
"The challenge," says Heather McFadyen, Benefits Coordinator.
Sandra Delavau, Payroll Coordinator for Support Staff agrees. "It's a challenging job but we have a great team. We are all different like puzzle pieces, but we all connect together."
Tracy Hebert, Payroll Coordinator for Educational Assistants echoes those comments. "The wonderful people. I enjoy working with the payroll team and the employees of the Louis Riel School Division."
Patrice San Filippo, Payroll Coordinator for Casuals and Subs has a chuckle at the question. "Ditto [the wonderful people]. It's [also] the opportunity to learn new things."
"We're all united, as a team," says Levesque.
Mravec says every employee that makes up her Department is unique. "We all have different personalities and strengths which allows us to have a cohesive department."
Thanks to the Payroll Department for all that you do!
