Public Board Meeting Highlights Oct. 19

October 22, 2021

The meeting was called to order by the Chair of the Board Louise Johnston, who began by reading LRSD’s land acknowledgement and welcoming everyone in attendance.  

Trustee Pamela Kolochuk brought news about volunteering with parents/guardians at École Van Belleghem by sorting vegetables for their fundraiser which generated almost $2,000. She also helped with fundraising efforts at Shamrock School and at the Sage Creek Run.  

Superintendent Michalik highlighted the withdrawal of Bill 64, the kick-off of the 2021 United Way and Riel-Elevate campaign, and the stunning artwork completed by Justine Proulx in the halls of the Louis Riel Arts & Technology Centre. 

Steven Lawrie, Director of Student and Clinical Services, introduced presentations about well-being initatives at École Julie-Riel and Marion School. The events were presented by the LRSD Well-Becoming Team which includes Alex Peniuta, Nanette Godbout, Andrea Leger, Elissa Hart, India Friesen, Alana White, Megan Appleton, Denise de Rocquigny-King, and Amber Zetaruk.  
The Board voted on and adopted the amendments to the process for Trustees attendance at Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings.  
Policy JLIJ Safe Work and Learning Environment: Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination of New International Students was given second and third reading and adopted.  

The Board voted on and adopted an update to Policy GBGBB/JLIH Safe Work and Learning Environment – Mandatory Mask Usage 2021. Policy CDBB – Temporary Absence: Superintendent of Schools or Secretary-Treasurer was amended to align with the organizational chart effective November 1, 2021.  

The board invested time in discussion of the Better Education Starts Today Strategy and the section of the Annual Report that focuses on MYSP Priority 3: Creating a Culture of Inquiry and Responsibility.
Superintendent Michalik provided pandemic-related updates. In order to assist Public Health with contact tracing, the division has proactively sent out an email requesting voluntary vaccination information for students in grades 7 to 12.   

The board received information on L’Ecole Apprendre-chez soi, the reopening of Family Centres, the meeting agenda of Vice-Principals, professional learning led by the Indigenous Education Team and communication metrics. The board also received an update regarding feedback received through surveys to the community regarding the ongoing refinements of Draft Policy JLII – Safe Work & Learning Environment: Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination of Students Participating in Extracurricular Activities.  

The meeting adjourned at 8:28. 

The next public meeting of the Louis Riel School Board is November 2, 2021, at 6:30 p.m.
