Not your average walk in the park

May 22, 2020

A typical walk during spring through Winnipeg’s Norwood neighbourhood includes views of the Red River, friendly faces and budding foliage. With the help of staff at Nordale School, the community now has some new scenery that gives people a chance to enjoy the outdoors and read at the same time.

Holly Pike, library assistant, and Karen Burkett, teacher-librarian, collaborated with Trevor Reimer, physical education specialist, to design a StoryWalk®.

Starting at the front door of Nordale School and weaving throughout the neighbourhood, participants follow the signs to discover the next page of a book by a local author.

Each sign features one page of the story, a fun activity that encourages movement and a QR code with the map of the route. The final sign includes a code to a digital guest book, so readers have an opportunity to share their experience.

“It’s a great way to get some fresh air, read a Canadian book and build family memories,” said Burkett. “In this time of certain restrictions, the StoryWalk® gets families out of the house to have fun, while still observing physical distancing.”

Nordale School’s StoryWalk® will be on display until the end of May.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
