On the evening of September 29, we learned from Manitoba public health officials that a Glenlawn Collegiate Institute (GCI) student had tested positive for COVID-19. Officials also informed us that the individual, who might have been infectious, was last at the school on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 25.
The investigation by public health officials into this case has assessed the exposure as low risk. They have also confirmed that the student did not acquire COVID-19 at the school.
Since the summer, LRSD leadership and GCI administration have worked together to ensure all students and staff have the recommended two metres of physical distance inside their high school. We have also worked on cohorting, scheduling and proper mask use as measures to minimize the risk to our entire community.
Based on the collective efforts of staff, students and families and adherence to the fundamentals, there have been no close contacts identified at the school level.
We also want to remind the community of our increased cleaning protocols and enhanced disinfecting routines that have been in effect each day in the school. With these in place, we feel confident that the school continues to be a safe place for staff and students.
I'd like to remind everyone that the school (or the division) cannot release the name or any identifying information about the confirmed case of COVID-19 to any member of the school, community or media.
Stay safe and be well.
