LRSD Indigenous, BIPOC, and Ethno-Cultural Diversity Employee Survey

At the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) Board of Trustees public meeting on March 16, the Board approved the LRSD Indigenous, BIPOC, and Ethno-Cultural Diversity Employee Survey. All staff in LRSD were sent the voluntary survey on March 17.

The survey was developed in consultation with staff, members of racialized communities and the division's various unions. Following the recommendations of the State of Equity Reports and Calls to Action from the Winnipeg Indigenous Executive Circle and the Newcomer Education Coalition, LRSD will gather employee data regarding the self-declared identity of Black, Indigenous or People of Colour (BIPOC), members of a racialized community and all ethno-cultural identities. 

I understand some staff may be thinking "why am I receiving this now?" Given that we've been asking families to voluntarily provide information about their children's self-declared identities for some time now, we'd like to know more about the community that serves those students. This will help us better understand the level of representation among staff in 40 schools in Winnipeg. With this knowledge, we can co-create an action plan to improve the ways we provide and build a more equitable and inclusive environment in the months and years to come. 

Although there is no explicit mention of employment equity in the Better Education Starts Today: Putting Students First strategy, Imperative #5 in the Report of the Commission on Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education is Commit to Equitable Outcomes and Improved Achievement for All. This aspiration in the report parallels Creating a Culture of Equity and Inclusion, one of LRSD's strategic priorities in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) that has been guiding us since 2019. 

This survey is anonymous, but we've included an option for staff to provide their name. We're giving people an opportunity to identify themselves so that we can have an open dialogue about the ongoing refinement of current policies and employment equity strategies. These policies and strategies can be shared with others as our 40 schools enter into a new relationship with schools across the city of Winnipeg in July 2022. 

We will be sharing the results of the survey by the end of June.
