Prior to our public meeting on January 22nd, the Louis Riel School Board and senior administration met with Winnipeg City Councilors Matt Allard, Markus Chambers and Brian Mayes. It was our first meeting since the October 24, 2018 civic election, and all indications are that we will continue to enjoy a positive and productive working relationship with our partners on City Council. Conversation focused primarily on the ongoing public transportation needs for students in LRSD, particularly the École Guyot and Island Lakes school communities.
Once our public meeting got underway, it included a presentation to the board by Grant Ganzar (Acting Director) and Al McDermid (Acting Assistant Director) of the LRSD International Student Program (ISP). As the program grows and more students visit Canada and attend LRSD schools, and as our own students continue to benefit from travel abroad, we are appreciative of the dedication of the entire ISP team.
At the suggestion of Trustee Josie Landry, the Board engaged in some focused conversation related to cell phone use by students in our schools and classrooms. It was an opportunity to talk about the opportunities and challenges of technology to students in 2019, and how a measured and reasonable approach to cell phone use in LRSD schools has become the best practice overall.
We were pleased with information shared in a report that indicates a high priority continues to be placed on the mental health and well-being of our students and staff. The Board also heard from Riel-Evate co-chair Trustee Chris Sigurdson that our LRSD foundation continues to be nurtured and developed as a significant and important community-based organization.
As we continue to gather the thoughts from students, staff and parents that will inform our new vision, mission, and values statements, we remind everyone of the public budget consultation taking place the evening of February 12, 2019 at the Board Office at 900 St. Mary's Road. Everyone is invited to attend to offer their feedback, ideas, and opinions.
