The Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) is not asking international students to return home at this time. Our main concern is the safety and wellbeing of students, so requiring them to return home at this time is not warranted. Many of our international students are from countries where borders are currently closed, others would face exorbitant costs for travel if flights are even available, and all would have to travel through airports and on routes that would take them through regions with higher risks of COVID-19 exposure than in Manitoba.
Our international students are welcome to remain in LRSD unless we are otherwise directed by provincial or federal authorities. We are working on extensive materials and resources to support educational continuance, all of which are available to our international students. Furthermore, our International Student Program staff will continue to support students and homestay families. However, if a family feels that it is the best decision for their son or daughter to return home, we encourage families to make travel arrangements as soon as possible. We will assist students in getting to the airport and will maintain direct communication with families until the student has arrived home safely. There will be no academic consequence for families that choose to have their son or daughter return home before the end of the school year. - Christian Michalik, Superintendent
