Frontenac School Receives Major Literacy Grant

On June 20, Frontenac School announced it was one of 30 schools Canada-wide to receive an $80,000 Literacy Grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.

Members from the Indigo store at St. Vital Centre presented the Frontenac Library Learning Commons with a gigantic cheque—literally and figuratively—and students and staff filled the gymnasium with joyful cheers.

Students who played an important role in the grant process accepted the cheque on behalf of the school. These students were featured in a video submission sharing their thoughts on the importance of reading and the needs of Frontenac School’s Library Learning Commons’ collection.

Jason Lesyk and Akira Sakaki, current Louis Riel Arts and Tech Centre students and Frontenac alumni, were also present as they volunteered their time and talents to help create the compelling video submission. The grant application process was truly a community effort.

The application proposed a three-year plan to enhance the school's collection to better reflect the diverse community of learners, refresh an aging collection, and strengthen classroom libraries.
Many thanks to the grant writing team led by teacher-librarian Elena Stangherlin, the students who participated in the video submission, and the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation for this gift of literacy for the Frontenac School community.
