With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people throughout our community faced additional challenges in their lives. To help support families in need, the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) expanded its food hamper program.
Between April and June, LRSD delivered over 3,000 hampers through the Feeding Families Initiative. The program was then extended throughout the summer months to deliver an additional 700 hampers during July and the first two weeks of August. The food hampers contain everything from canned fruit and fresh vegetables to pantry staples such as boxed cereal and bread.
Staff members from Dakota Collegiate, the Learning Team, LRSD Family Centres and Victor Mager, Frontenac and Lavallee Schools came together to organize and pack the food. The hampers were then distributed across the division by the Transportation Department.
Community partners Peak of the Market, Dairy Producers of Manitoba, Dakota Family Foods, Cobb Bread and Prairie Routes, as well as many private donors were instrumental in supporting food security for families.
Parents/guardians can contact their child’s school if they need support with food security in the coming weeks and months.
