Students Come Together to Share Hopes for Reconciliation

January 19, 2018

On November 14, 2017, over 200 students from all seven LRSD high schools attended a citizenship forum focused on reconciliation at the Board Office.

Citizenship is a key priority and focus for LRSD. We are committed to teaching students the importance of interacting with different communities and cultures and celebrating diversity.

Superintendent Duane Brothers opened the day with a conversation about stories and identity. Brothers had every student stand up and introduce themselves to peers from another school. He encouraged students to get to know their own stories, the stories of their family and friends and our collective story as Canadians. “You folks will run the world someday,” Brothers shared with the group. “This is why we need young, active citizens. You will all play a key role in reconciliation and the future of Canada.”

Frank Deer, LRSD Scholar in Residence, then introduced Kevin Lamoureux, National Education Lead for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Passionate about the process of healing, Kevin Lamoureux is a leading force behind bridging the gap of knowledge and supporting educators in bringing the dream of Reconciliation to life.

To further the dialogue, self-identified Indigenous students and staff from LRSD lead a panel in the afternoon where they shared personal and family stories while students were able to ask questions.

When young people join in the conversation, they are able to discuss these issues, learn from them and become active citizens who contribute to their local, national and global communities.

At the end of the day, everyone came together to create a star blanket inscribed with their hopes for reconciliation. By engaging a dialogue, we help students understand reconciliation and how they can make these hopes a reality in the future.
