At the second Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) Board of Trustees Public Meeting in March, Trustee Turner brought news regarding Marion School and how the students and staff are adapting and taking on new challenges during the pandemic. Marion was home to a group of students and staff involved in testing the Anishinaabe Manito Ahbee Aki world built in Minecraft: Education Edition released globally on Feb. 10, 2021.
Superintendent Michalik shared that members of the LRSD Minecraft team were hosting webinars for educators worldwide to talk about how the Manito Ahbee Aki game can be used to support learning in the classroom.
Fadi Ennab presented the School Resource Officer (SRO) Independent Equity-Based Research project that he is leading (external to LRSD). Students, parents and staff will be engaged in one-on-one interviews, surveys and focus groups. The report will be released to the public this summer.
Lisa Aitken, Assistant Superintendent, and Corey Kapilik, principal, Marion School, provided a presentation on the Community-based Aboriginal Teacher Program (CATEP) program supported by LRSD. We have five individuals entering the program this year.
The Board was excited to pass the motion that Jeff Anderson is appointed assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services & French Immersion Programming, effective April 5, 2021.
Superintendent Michalik provided an update on Bill 64 – The Education Modernization Act and the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Commission Report on Education. LSRD has created this page
on the LRSD website that will provide links and continual updates for our community.
Capital updates were provided on the Collège Jeanne-Sauvé (CJS) Classroom Addition work plan and conceptual floor plan and on the acquisition of school property for the new École Sage Creek School.
Superintendent Michalik shared that after a lot of consultation, the annual Ethno-cultural Diversity Employee Survey will be released tomorrow. It is a voluntary survey for all divisional employees.
Action items included discussing the Status of the School Resource Officer (SRO) program in LRSD. The notice of motion brought forward by Trustee Landry and seconded by Trustee Sigurdson regarding suspending the SRO program in LRSD was defeated. The SRO program will continue within LRSD.
The next Public Meeting is on April 6.
Agendas will be on the LRSD website the Friday prior, and all are welcome to attend.
Have a great spring break!
