English as an Additional Language
The newcomer community we welcome from around the world is diverse. Our newcomer students' English language proficiency, school experiences, pathways of arrival to Canada, and family backgrounds differ, and our EAL programming strives to respond to these differing needs and circumstances. The Louis Riel School Division's School and Classroom Supports Team provides programming guidance and professional development to school teams.
The team supports school teams in the areas of:
- student assessment
- instructional practice
- welcoming newcomer students and their families guided by an ethic of hospitality
Newcomer Settlement Supports
The LRSD Settlement Program provides community connection programming and services to support newcomers and their families.
Our team offers:
- Well-being navigation activities such as parenting, sewing, healthy relationships, computer literacy programming
- English Conversation Circle
- Indigenous and newcomer cultural awareness programs and connections-based social activities
- Youth programming
- Community activities that bring newcomers together to explore their community, discover Canadian culture and history, and connect with essential services
- Referrals for employment, housing, education, job training and mental health support to appropriate service providers based on clients’ needs
Our settlement team is dedicated to empowering newcomer families access the resources they need to thrive and seamlessly integrate into their new life in Canada and their local community.
