    Our Namesake

Julie-Riel left a legacy for Manitobans that continues to permeate our present culture. Born into a French-Canadian family in the Red River Settlement, she lived alongside the Métis, and recognized the benefits of both cultures. Julie and her husband Louis had eleven children, the first of which inherited his father's name and was later recognized as the "Father of Manitoba."

Julie-Riel was known to be a highly honoured and respected woman with strong physical and moral characteristics. She was a devout Catholic who embraced the importance of a sound education.
