Success Story
Mme Loewen’s class met with Richard Lugumire via Teams this week. Richard came to Canada as a refugee in grade 4. He had not attended school regularly before his arrival in Canada, and he spoke no English. In junior high and high school, Richard was invited to try out for Team Manitoba for Basketball and track and field. He chose instead to concentrate on football. At age 15, he was the quarterback for the U18 Manitoba football team. He went on to win provincial public speaking competitions and worked hard to succeed in academics despite missing most of his first years in school.
Richard talked to the students about how to succeed in school and at University. He told them that even when you are a top level athlete, you need to get good marks in school in order to receive sports scholarships. He talked about how he made sure he stayed on top of his homework despite intense training. He said that top level teams want to see that you are taking care of yourself, keeping your body healthy. He also emphasized how important it is to choose good friends who will help you concentrate on your studies, who will support you through bad times, and who want you to succeed in life. He told them that those whom you choose to surround you will determine how your life goes.
Richard Lugumire will be attending Waterloo University in the fall. It was an inspiring message.
