How to get started

Scholarship Information

If you haven’t already, now’s the time to start thinking about both internal (school-based) and external awards!

Whether you’re applying for scholarships now or later this year, it’s never too early to prepare. Many scholarships look for students who demonstrate leadership, community involvement, and volunteer experience — not just strong academics.

Get involved! Join a club, take on a leadership role, or give back through volunteering. Every bit of experience helps strengthen your application and shows your commitment to making a difference.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Bigger scholarships require more work!
  • Check the criteria — does it apply to you?
  • Need reference letters? Don’t wait until the last minute! Teachers, coaches, supervisors, and volunteer coordinators need time to write strong letters. Choose someone who really knows you well.
  • For major scholarships (like Loran, Schulich, Leaders of Tomorrow), involvement often starts before Grade 12.
  • It’s never too late to start! There are many scholarships available later in the year and even in post-secondary that value school and community involvement.
