Strengthening Data Governance and Responsible Use of AI at LRSD

Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) is working to strengthen how we care for and protect information across our division. At the heart of this work is data governance—how we responsibly collect, use, store, and protect data—and a shared understanding that each and every staff member plays a role in protecting information.

Technology is changing rapidly, and artificial intelligence (AI) is now a reality in education. While AI carries new challenges and concerns, it also offers meaningful opportunities when used thoughtfully and responsibly. The truth is AI is here to stay, and LRSD’s focus is on embracing it in a way that aligns with our values, professional standards, and commitment to student and staff wellbeing.

To guide this work, LRSD has established a Data Governance Working Group to actively shape how data and technology are used across the division. This includes developing clear AI guidelines to support responsible, secure, and ethical use. The goal is to create clarity, confidence, and consistency.

When supported by strong governance, AI has the potential to be a helpful assistant, freeing up time and energy to allow teachers and staff to focus on the work that matters most.

By treating data governance as a collective responsibility and implementing AI with care, we can protect essential information while using tools that deepen shared understanding and support the lived experience of students and staff.
