The new LRSD Service Hub at Kookum Hilda Centre welcomed community members on September 29 for its very first event, a special gathering in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Truth and Reconciliation Day is a time to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, reflect on the lasting impacts of residential schools, and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
More than 40 community members joined us for an evening of connection and learning. The Drum Circle led by Niakwa School teacher Melanie Richard filled the Centre with songs, stories, and community. Families, students, staff, and community gathered to drum, visit, share food, and build relationships.
Community was also invited to create leaves for our Truth and Reconciliation. Watching the tree grow was a powerful reminder that reconciliation is something we all help nurture through our actions.
We were especially honoured to have members of Kookum Hilda Kent’s family attend the event and they were able to see how LRSD is recognizing and celebrating her legacy through the new community hub that carries her name. Their attendance made the evening even more meaningful and reminded us of the importance of a strong community.
